The Tamil Nadu State Government has introduced the ‘Kalaignar Kaapittu Thittam’ for Life Saving Treatments in July 2009. Since its launch, it has been one of the sought after schemes. The Kalaignar Insurance Scheme has been implemented in collaboration with Star Health and allied Insurance company. The State government will pay the entire insurance premium. People who have an annual income of less than Rs. 72,000 stand eligible for the Kalaignar Insurance Scheme.

Under the Kalaignar Kapitu Thittam, the sum insured is Rs.1,00,000/- for the entire family for 4 years. People are eligible to avail cashless medical facilities only in the empanelled hospitals. Various hospitals are empanelled for one or more specialities.

After verification of the income, the families falling below poverty line are issued card and the family holding the Kalaignar Insurance Card can avail the insurance cover and undergo surgery in any of the empanelled Hospital of their choice. The Government in association with the empanelled Hospitals periodically conducts medical camps to identify the sick patients who require surgical intervention and they are appropriately guided to the Hospitals for further treatment.
