MEET OUR CONSULTANT- A CORRECTIVE SURGERY

This month we feature Dr. Vidhya, who completed her MBBS as well as her MS in General Surgery from Madras Medical College and her specialization in Plastic Surgery from Kilpauk Medical College. She completed her fellowship in from Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. She pursued specialised training in Plastic Surgery in UK for a period of five years.

Her area of special interests is corrective Breast Surgeries and Trauma Care.

What does a plastic surgeon do?

A plastic surgeon performs body contouring- namely liposuction, by removing excess fat from difficult pockets.

Cosmetic surgeries like correcting facial features, congenital or birth defects corrections like cleft palate are performed by a Plastic Surgeon.

Trauma care like reconstruction of the body parts of Burn and Accident victims are also in the scope of a plastic surgeon’s work.

Are more and more people seeking the help of a Plastic Surgeon ? If yes, What is the reason for this change in trend?

Yes, more and more people are seeking the services of plastic surgeon as they want to look good and well poised. Financial independence and the change in outlook of women brought about by education is the primary reason as we have more women seeking us.

Are the patients satisfied with the result at times a fabric that we like the most does not seem dramatic or appealing on the couch we choose to clad!

This is very true! The selection of patient for a plastic surgical procedure is very important .We generally do that by finding out if the patient has already had multiple corrections before or if they have any psychological imbalance and also understand the reason why they want to correct their feature. The answers will give us an insight into whether the candidate can be taken for an elective procedure.

How do you understand the actual correction a patient is looking for? For instance in correcting the nose (Rhinoplasty)?

We usually request the patient to show us a few pictures of the nose which they consider perfect. After understanding what they have in their mind we tell them what is feasible and the closest that can be achieved.

Since you said your specialisation is reconstruction of breasts, please let us know about the cancer patients for whom it is a necessity.

Though the cancer patients require a breast reconstruction, surprisingly not more than 30% of the patients go in for reconstruction in India. It is invariably women over the age of 40, who suffer from Breast Cancer and they are reluctant to spend any money to enhance their appearance as the cancer therapy has burnt a hole in their pocket

The women in younger age groups also prefer to augment their breasts with hormone supplement instead of having implants, though implants would be a better option.

Though plastic surgery is an elective surgery. I often hear of Plastic surgeons attending to Emergency calls? A little contradicting?

You are right though corrective procedures are elective, the accident victims need an emergency care by a plastic surgeon to reconstruct their broken and severed body parts like finger etc, soft tissues, tendons, ligaments.

On one hand we have patients seeking professional help to change their appearance as they want super natural features , on the other hand we have the accident victims and cancer patients for whom a reconstruction is a necessity and will immensely benefit from these procedures and they shy away from seeking our help

Lack of awareness is the primary reason, morbid fears also prevent them from seeking professional help to rebuild their features which would rebuild their self image, self esteem and self confidence!

Why can't you take a picture of a Indian woman with hair curlers?
