VITAL ORGAN – LUNGS FOR THE SUPPLY OF OXYGEN

Respiration is an important process essential to sustain life. It is carried out by the organ called Lungs

Lungs are present on either side of the chest. The main function of the Lungs is to transport oxygen from the atmosphere to the blood and to remove the Carbon di oxide from the blood

Oxygen is necessary for the functioning of the cells in our body and any disturbance in this process will reflect in our overall health.

Due to rapid industrialization and urbanization there is an increase in the atmospheric pollution which affects our Lungs.

Two Airway diseases that are increasing are Asthma and COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

Asthma is the inflammatory condition in our lung air ways. Asthmatic patients experience episodic breathlessness and wheeze which could be life threatening at times. The common triggers of asthma includes dust mites, dust, smoke, animal dander, perfumes, emotional stress, pollens from plants etc. Patients should avoid the trigger if possible. The most effective treatment for asthma is inhaled therapy. The asthma is not curable it can only be controlled.

COPD refers to chronic bronchitis where the airways of lungs become narrowed. This leads to a limitation of the flow of air to and from the lungs causing shortness of breath. In contrast to asthma, the limitation of airflow is poorly reversible and usually gets progressively worse over time.

COPD is caused by noxious particles or gas, most commonly from tobacco smoking, which triggers an abnormal inflammatory response in the lung. The inflammatory response in the larger airways is known as chronic bronchitis, which is diagnosed clinically when people regularly cough up sputum. The natural course of COPD is characterized by occasional sudden worsening of symptoms called acute exacerbations, most of which are caused by infections or air pollution. The diagnosis of COPD requires lung function tests. Important management strategies are smoking cessation, vaccinations, rehabilitation, and drug therapy (often using inhalers). Some patients go on to require long-term oxygen therapy or lung transplantation.

Lung Tuberculosis is another major infection affecting the lungs. It is caused by Bacteria called Mycobacterium. TB is spread by droplet infection when the patients cough. It is curable if treated with right medication for the required duration. Minimum of six months duration is required. Government is offering the medicines free of cost to the patients who cannot afford the treatment. Progressive lung tuberculosis is common in our country. Statistics reveal every three minutes two persons die of TB.

Keeping our environment clean, smoke free and pollution free will go a long way to keep our lungs at its working Best.

A Big No to Tobacco can it harms the Lung to a great extent leading to Lung Cancer which will cost us our Life!

A carpenter was in a terrible hurry. He had to work as quickly as possible to cut a very heavy 10 foot plank into 10 equal sections. If it takes 1 minute per cut, how long will it take him to get the 10 equal pieces?
