All went well till the fatal day in August 2007 (which he neither remembers nor wishes to recollect). While hanging precariously to make an electrical connection in an high rise building at about 40 ft height, he suddenly found that the vehicle carrying him had moved away leaving him suspended in the air and found himself helplessly tossed to the ground. In the next few seconds he was numb below his waist.
He had broken his spine in the fall. It was fixed with plates and after two months of intensive care he was sent back to his home town in Tamil Nadu.
After his return Akbar Ali could not move without crutches. He was paralysed below his waist with no bladder and bowel control. He was put on a catheter to excrete the urine.
A programme on Jaya TV about the stem cell therapy for paralysis was the turning point in Akbar Ali’s life.
His family got in touch with Lifeline Hospital , to get more details on the therapy. They consulted Dr Rajkumar in December 2007 .
Akbar Ali and his family were briefed about the treatment and were also informed that the chances of recovery and reversal were about 25-30%.
The decision was taken in favor of Stem cell treatment by Akbar Ali’s father as he was in a near vegetable condition without even being able to urinate. He faced the worst and they understood that even if he did not improve with this treatment things would not detoriate any further. But if he responded it would be like getting a new lease of life so a trial was considered worthwhile. Akbar Ali successfully underwent stem cell Therapy at Lifeline Hospital, and within four months he could feel and move his toes and could urinate without the Catheter.
Gradually he started walking and moving without support , but still lacks sensation in a few places in his thigh region is also unable to control his bowel movement for which he is being treated.Considering the fact that he was totally paralysed in 2007, his overall improvement is amazing.
A cheerful Akbar says that he is now confidently moving around in a two wheeler but with a little regret says that he is unable to take work as he has not regained total control over his bowel movement .
We wish Akbar Ali a speedy recovery and a great future .
We salute the immense courage and strength of this youngster!
