It is the biggest gland in the human body weighing approximately 1.5 kg .The liver is fed with blood at the rate of 1.5litre per minute. It extracts all toxins from the blood.
It is done in two phases.
In phase I the toxins are made less potent by a deactivating process. In phase II it is packaged into structures that allows them to be excreted in the urine or feces.
It is a marvel to know that the liver has the special ability to customize enzymes to metabolise a specific toxin.
Sometimes, when too much of toxins are ingested the liver starts malfunctioning. Especially when too much of alcohol is consumed, liver gets burdened and in extreme cases can give up and stop functioning altogether and it is termed as ‘Liver Failure’.
When the Liver malfunctions the toxins are not being broken down in phase I and a slow down in Phase II makes it harder for the body to excrete them and they circulate in the blood stream. The kidney is also in the danger of being affected.
When the damaged part of the liver is removed by surgery the remaining lobes have the power to grow back. Indeed the only internal organ to exhibit this regeneration.
All that we need to do to take care is not to overload oneself with toxins which can be done by better food choices, reducing or refraining from consuming alcohol, reducing the exposure to pesticides and chemicals by taking organically cultivated food crops and avoiding unnecessary medication.
