  Physical fitness is often defined as the condition resulting from a lifestyle that leads to the development of an optimal level of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility; as well as the achievement and maintenance of ideal body weight. The exercise that develops cardio vascular endurance is not very effective for developing an optimum balance of muscle strength or flexibility . Similarly strength training does not improve the cardio vascular capacity and flexibility .The flexibility training in turn is not effective in improving the other two aspects of fitness.

Thus we have to  perform a separate set of exercises for each aspect of fitness.

The most neglected area of exercise is Flexibility Training.

Flexibility is the capacity to perform a range of movement about a joint.

The lack of flexibility restricts our mobility. It can be due to genetic inheritance, the joint structure itself, connective tissue elasticity within the muscles, tendons or the skin surrounding the joint, strength of the opposing muscle group and neuro muscular coordination.

Flexibility training minimizes these factors that limit the flexibility ,as well as help balance muscle groups that might be overused during physical training session or as a result of poor posture.

Flexibility training will increase the physical efficiency and performance as a flexible joint requires less energy to move through a range of motion. It decreases the risks of injury, increases blood supply to joint structures, and increases the neuro muscular coordination by increasing the velocity of the nerve impulse. It improves muscular balance and postural awareness.

The clinical evidence supports that the low back pain can be decreased by improving the lumbo-pelvic flexibility as it reduces the stress on the lumbar spine.
