VITAL ORGAN - PANCREAS - EXOCRINE OR ENDOCRINE??
The pancreas is a small gland found in the abdomen very close to the stomach. It produces enzymes and hormones which help in breaking down the food we eat. One of the most known hormones it produces is insulin which controls the balance of glucose between the blood and the rest of the body. It also secrets pancreatic juice containing digestive enzymes that pass to the small intestine. These enzymes help in the further breakdown of the carbohydrates, protein, and fat. A healthy pancreas produces exactly the right chemicals at the right times in the right quantities for digesting the food we eat. When it malfunctions, it fails to produce sufficient digestive enzymes and food is poorly absorbed, weight loss and/or diarrhea can result. When pancreas produces too little insulin it raises the level of glucose in the blood, resulting in diabetes and this in turn increases the risk of a number of problems throughout the body. Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas. The inflammation may be sudden (acute) or ongoing (chronic). Acute pancreatitis usually involves a single "attack," after which the pancreas returns to normal. Severe acute pancreatitis can be life threatening. With chronic pancreatitis, permanent damage occurs to the pancreas and its function, often leading to fibrosis (scarring). Acute pancreatitis is abrupt that may follow a heavy meal or an alcoholic binge, causing pancreatic enzymes to break down the pancreas. Gallstones or alcohol abuse are the most common causes of acute pancreatitis. Chronic pancreatitis takes place over time and involves progressive destruction of the pancreas. Alcoholism, cystic fibrosis and gallstones that block the pancreatic duct. Pancreatitis is more prevalent in men than women. It can also lead to cancer, which is more common in people with diabetes. This can be avoided with healthy diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Avoiding Smoking and drinking can also prevent pancreatic malfunction. Genetic disposition plays a major role and can occur in persons following a healthy lifestyle too.
