VITAL ORGAN - KNOW YOUR BONES
The skeleton contains 206 bones. Babies have over 270, but by adulthood many of these have fused together. Bones are relatively light, yet five times stronger than steel. They contain cells, minerals, protein, and water. Various ailments of the bones result in disability, deformity and loss of function. Orthopaedics is the branch of medicine which deals with the issues of bone and joints. Bone ailments are divided into those caused by trauma like fractures and sprains and those caused by wear and tear like arthritis, back pain etc. Osteoporosis is an asymptomatic (symptom less) disease which leads to considerable disability in elderly population. It is considered to be a silent epidemic and in the aging o population it becomes more significant. Bones become fragile and likely to fracture easily. Particularly the hips and spine are prone to breakage. According to a recent study 44% of women above the age of 50 suffer from Osteoporosis. Men also suffer from this condition ,though a little later than women. The rapid bone density loss can be checked by preventive check ups, Routine blood test for calcium and a scan which measures the bone density are helpful . More detailed blood investigations are also available to diagnose and assess the disease as well as assess the effectiveness of therapy. These tests are recommended if you are above 50 or have attained menopause. 1000mgs of calcium per day is recommended.to minimize osteoporosis There are medicines which can stop and prevent further bone loss if osteoporosis has set in. Osteoporosis can be averted by .maintaining ideal body weight, exercising regularly, maintaining proper posture and by getting adequate calcium in diet . Though many suffering from osteoporosis consider rest as an option to give them relief and improve their condition, contrary to their belief it will aggravate bone loss. So whatever may be the capacity, one should try and maintain their existing level of activity. Prevention is better than cure . This best applies to Osteoporosis as rebuilding the lost bone is next to impossibility.
