MEET OUR CONSULTANT-PAINLESS SURGERY

We meet Dr.T.Perungo who graduated from Stanely Medical College in 2004, pursued his Post Graduation in General Surgery in Chengalpet Medical College.

His area of special interest is Gastroenterological procedures done with minimum invasion.

There is a general complaint that surgeons recommend surgery without first treating the patients with medication.
I disagree with this. For instance, the gastric reflux, if mild, can be treated with medication alone. If it is exaggerated constricting the non return valve that allows the reflux by surgery can be the only option. Outwardly it may seem that one got his problem resolved with medication whereas the other underwent surgery. Similarly, some ulcers can be treated with medication; others based on position, may require removal surgically. Comparison of such notes, make one believe that a surgery is being unnecessarily performed.

You said that your area of special interest is Minimally Invasive surgery. Please tell us about your interest in this area.
A surgeon's stand point for recommending a surgery is that he wants to end the agony of his patient at the earliest. The Minimally Invasive surgery reduces the recoup and post surgical recovery time.

I understand that you recently won an award. Can you tell us more about it?
I won the Sundaram Award in the General Surgical Category. It is a state level competition, held annually by the ASI (Association of Surgeons of India), Tamilnadu and Pondicherry chapter. The abstract on the work is sent followed by a presentation by the selected candidate. The prize carries a Medal and a Certificate.

What was your subject?
My subject was on 'Ultrasound' guided nerve block for post operative pain relief in patients undergoing Laparoscopic Surgery.
This involves the blocking of the nerves which sense pain by injecting local anesthesia guided by ultrasound. Thus a Laparoscopic surgery clubbed with nerve block, akin to epidural administered for pain free labor, is a boon to patients to recover from the surgery without much scar and pain.

Now at lifeline hospital we do the Laparoscopic procedures by 'SILS'(Details in Vital procedure) with nerve blocks which will make most surgeries a day care procedure in the near future.

Joke

A woman goes to Italy to attend a 2-week, company training session.

Her husband drives her to the airport and wishes her to have a good trip.

The wife answers, "Thank you honey, what would you like me to bring for you?"

The husband laughs and says: "An Italian girl!!!"

The woman kept quiet and left.

Two weeks later he picks her up at he airport and asks: "So, honey, how was the trip?"

"Very good, thank you." "And, what happened to my present?"

"Which present?" She asked.

"The one I asked for - an Italian girl!!"

"Oh, that" she said

"Well, I did what I could, now we have to wait for few months to see if it is a girl !!!
